Ganesh Visarjan Vidhi — Step by Step
Follow these 9 traditional steps for a peaceful, auspicious, and respectful farewell to Lord Ganesha:
Complete the Final Puja
Light deepam, burn fragrant incense (dhoopam), and offer fresh flowers and red akshata to the deity.
Perform Uttarapuja
Chant farewell slokas thanking Lord Ganesha for removing obstacles and sanctifying your household.
Offer Naivedyam
Offer jaggery sweets, Kudumulu, coconut, seasonal fruits, and betel leaves with nuts (Tamboolam).
Perform Aarti
Wave illuminated camphor (Mangala Harathi) while family members sing traditional Ganesha devotional songs.
Seek Blessings & Take Prasad
Perform Pradakshina, bow down to seek blessings for wisdom and prosperity, and distribute sanctified prasad.
Prepare Idol Respectfully
Gently move the idol slightly forward on the peetham (signifying formal movement) and remove plastic wraps.
Carry Idol Safely
Hold the idol with both hands or securely place on a decorated platform while chanting "Ganapati Bappa Morya".
Perform Designated Immersion
Immerse the clay deity gently in water at designated artificial tanks, lakes, or clean home containers.
Return Respectfully
Wash hands and feet upon returning home, light a fresh diya at the altar, and pray for Ganesha's return next year.
What is Uttarapuja?
Uttarapuja (ఉత్తర పూజ) is the concluding farewell ceremony performed before the Ganesha idol is taken for immersion. During Prana Pratishtha on Chaturthi, the divine consciousness of Sri Vighneshwara is invoked into the murti. Uttarapuja expresses heartfelt gratitude for the deity's stay and respectfully requests Lord Ganesha to return to His heavenly abode (Kailasa) while leaving behind wisdom, peace, and blessings.
- Offering Akshata, sandalwood paste, and fresh flowers while chanting farewell slokas.
- Offering final Naivedyam (fruits/sweets) and performing Mangala Harathi.
- Chanting "Yantu Deva Ganaah Sarve..." and gently nudging the idol forward to mark the conclusion of sthapana.

2026 (Telugu Traditions)
Eco-Friendly Ganesh Visarjan
- Prefer Natural Clay Idols: Choose unpainted Matti Ganapathi that dissolves completely without harming aquatic ecosystems.
- Remove Non-Biodegradables: Detach plastic garlands, thermocol decor, and artificial ornaments before immersion.
- Home Bucket / Pot Immersion: Dissolve small clay idols in water containers at home and use the holy nutrient-rich clay water for potted plants.
- Use Artificial Immersion Tanks: Support city authorities by utilizing designated artificial ponds constructed near lakes and rivers.
- Compost Floral Offerings: Segregate Nirmalya (flowers, durva, bilva leaves) for composting instead of tossing plastic packets into water bodies.
Visarjan Safety Checklist
- Follow Local Authority Guidelines: Adhere strictly to designated routes, police instructions, and immersion ghat timings.
- Supervise Children: Keep children at a safe distance from lake banks, sea tides, and crowded procession vehicles.
- Do Not Enter Deep Water: Never wade into deep, murky, or fast-flowing water currents without trained lifeguards.
- Electrical Safety: Keep procession generators, cables, and lighting equipment completely dry and away from water.
- Safe Vehicle Transport: Secure large idols firmly with safety ropes during transit to prevent tipping.
